When is the best time to book a tour?

  • The Milky Way

Full Moons are great, but they actually an astronomer’s worst nightmare. During a full Moon, the Moon is so bright it washes out the Milky Way and fainter stars and doesn’t make for great observing conditions, even of the Moon itself. For the darkest skies consider booking around a New Moon.

  • The Desert

It’s no surprise that the desert can get uncomfortably hot. It is true that a dry heat is much more tolerable than in a humid climate, but the threat of dehydration and heat stroke are still very much a possibility, so it’s wise to avoid booking a tour in the dead of summer, especially if you’d like to do some hiking. The winter is a great time to explore the desert, but nighttime temperatures are quite frigid, so Spring and Fall are your best bets.

The best time for desert tours are between late April and early June and between late August and late October.

  • Snow Pack

While temperatures in the mountains may be comfortable beginning in April or May, the snow that accumulated during the previous winter takes time to melt. Many trails and 4x4 roads are covered in snow or they are too treacherous due to the melting snow run-off that they do not open until June or July depending on how much snow a mountain received during the winter and how warm the following spring/summer is.

It’s wise to avoid booking tours through the Grand Tetons or Western Colorado until at least mid-June each year.
