Death valley

cosmic coachella:

Over last few years, the majority of our solar system neighbors have been hiding behind the Sun and weren’t visible at night, but in January they all come back in a remarkable reunion.

As the Sun sets, we’ll see Venus, Saturn and Jupiter (and their moons), Mars, and we’ll top it off with the craters on the Moon. On the second stage are the usual winter targets: Orion and the Orion Nebula, the Pleiades, and the Andromeda Galaxy.

Sailing stones

The famous Sailing Stones of Racetrack Playa mysteriously drift along a dried lake bed, completely on their own, leaving tracks behind them hundreds of feet long.

These stones  are only accessible to people with rugged and reliable high-clearance vehicles. The 27-mile-long trek over eroded washboards of sharp stones trounce a new vehicle seemingly every day.
